Black Side of Tugu Tani

The woman who killed nine people when she drove through a crowd of pedestrians in Central Jakarta was under the influence of drugs at the time of the crash, police said on Monday.

Afriani Susanti, 29, who was driving a Daihatsu Xenia car with three of her friends, tested positive for methamphetamine, Jakarta Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Rikwanto said.

“The results of urine tests showed that it was positive. There was methamphetamine content; the same with her three friends. One of the three was identified as also having consumed ganja [marijuana],” Rikwanto said.

The Jakarta Police traffic chief, Sr. Comr. Dwi Sigit Nurmantyas, said Afriani was with two men and one other woman when the accident took place near the Tugu Tani roundabout shortly before noon on Sunday.

Rikwanto said police were trying to determine the type and quantity of the drugs consumed.

“The suspect said they consumed ecstasy,” he said.

Rikwanto said prior to the incident, the four attended a birthday party and had also consumed alcoholic drinks at a cafe.

“From the cafe, they went to an entertainment club and police suspect they consumed the illegal drugs there,” he said.

He said Afriani would be charged with drug possession and consumption. Although only the driver had earlier been declared a suspect in the case, Rikwanto said all four may be charged with drug consumption.

Afriani could face charges of driving recklessly and involuntary manslaughter, as well as driving without a valid driver’s license or proper car registration documents.

The four remain in police custody, Rikwanto said.

He said Afriani and her friends had not provided reliable information in the ongoing investigation.

“One example is the suspect said the brake was not functioning, but after we checked, it turned out not to be the case,” Rikwanto said.

The suspect later said that her mind went blank for a few seconds, and it was then that the car swerved and hit the pedestrians.

“Police suspect that the loss of concentration was because of the influence of having not slept enough and consuming illegal substances,” Rikwanto said.

Comment:
It proved us that the awareness of our society in many aspects are in a low level. Why? Because there are many cases of law-breaking are taken to be lightly by the law enforcer in Indonesia. The drunk-driver who crashed many pedestrians was proven using drugs-abuse also. If the police can solve the cases of drug-abusing, then Afriani wouldn't do drug-abusing, she wouldn't drive crazily, then this tragedy might never happen guys. See it's kind of domino effects. The judicial can't uphold the law strongly so the society's awareness  is also in the low level.
